artificial intelligence could suffer from real depression

back to blog

Artificial intelligence (AI) systems are inherently learning machines that process huge amounts of data to iteratively draw new connections. In humans, depression is thought to be caused by a deficiency in serotonin, a neurotransmitter that also plays a key role in learning.

AI clearly doesn’t use the biological molecule serotonin to learn, but it is possible that learning itself might require processes so similar to serotonin regulation that AI could experience similar effects, including depression.

Mind. Blown.
